V. Vidzemniece made her first dance steps under the leadership of I. Freimanis; from 1967 to 1975 she studied ballet performance at VEF Culture Palace Children Ballet Studio led by A. Grimze. In 1994 she received a bachelor’s degree in choreography from Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (JVLMA); in 2005 she received a master’s degree from the same institution. From 1975 to 1998 she was a dancer of State Dance Ensemble ‘Daile’, soloist of Riga Variety Concert Union Ballet, soloist of Latvian State Philharmonics ballet; she participated in many Show productions and contemporary dance projects.
V. Vidzemniece has 28 years of teaching experience – at Riga Variety Concert Union, I. Adamoviča Ballet School, Z. Krancmane Modelling School, concert union Kamertons, Riga 6th Secondary School, youth wind orchestra ‘Auseklītis’ and at other institutions. Since 1997 she is the Artistic Director and the choreographer of dance group Allegro; the group has given guest performances in Germany, France, Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria, Estonia, participated in concerts of Latvian Song and Dance Festivals, Latvian School Youth Song and Dance Festivals, and concerts of international contemporary dance festival Laiks dejot (Time to Dance, 2004-2008). Since 2008 V. Vidzemniece teaches ballet performance and history of choreography at JVLMA; she also leads research works of postgraduate students of the Choreography Department.
V. Vidzemniece has honed her skills and widened her professional knowledge at seminars and masterclasses with such teachers as Randy James ,Duglas Nilsen, Anna Keller, Adam Hundt, Thierry Verger (jazz dance), Fiona Millword, Sally Doughty, Gabriel Shtaiger, Dana Thai Soon Bourges, Oren Tishler, Zohar Rabinovich, Joe Alter, Neil Fisher, George Blashke, Nai- Ni Chen (contemporary dance, contact improvisation, dance composition and other fields); she has attended lectures on the topics of the history of choreography presented by Donald McDonagh, George Jackson, Stuart Sweeney, Kazuko Jamazaki.
V. Vidzemniece has diverse and extensive experience as a choreographer – she has produced dances for show programmes, cheerleaders, majorettes, created choreographies for fashion shows, illusionist shows, for wind orchestra parades and shows, and for students of I. Adamoviča Ballet School and Z.Errs Ballet Studio. For contemporary dance group Allegro she has choreographed Dvēseles nospiedumi with music by G. Pelēcis, Cita valoda with music by S. Chandra, Variāciju rēķini with music by E. Kusturica, Apvedceļš- with music by J. Karlsons. She has produced jazz choreographies Popūrijs with music by K. Basey, Koncertā with music by F. Sinatra, Kerija with music by R. Pauls, and others. V. Vidzemniece is a member of Latvian Contemporary Dance Choreographers’ Association.
