Gunta Rasa

Professor, Department of Chamber Ensemble, Piano Duo and Piano Accompaniment

Gunta Rasa (Sproge), pianist, Prof. of Jazeps Vitols Latvian Music Academy (JVLMA), is an experienced chamber musician and teacher. Up to 2008 G.Rasa being an active member of various chamber ensembles performed in Latvia, other European countries, the USA and Australia. Since 1978 she has belonged to the teaching staff of the Chamber Ensemble and Piano Accompaniment Chair of JVLMA, in 1991 becoming Head of the said Chair.

After graduating from the Latvian State Conservatoire named after Jazeps Vitols (at present JVLMA) G.Rasa completed the correspondence assistantship course of the Moscow Gnesins’ State Music Teaching Institute (at present Gnesins’ Russian Academy of Music). Her professional experience was enlarged while working on probation at higher music educational establishments in Brno, Berlin and Copenhagen.

Gunta Rasa has been a jury member of international competitions and conducted chamber music master classes in higher music educational establishments in Europe, as well as in Carbondale (USA) and Adelaide (Australia).  She has organized and conducted International Master Courses for young Latvian musicians in Jaungulbene, Ogre, Sigulda (1994-2014) and conducted master classes for the Latvian music school teachers. Since 2009 G.Rasa has actively participated in the European Chamber Music Teachers Association (ECMTA). G.Rasa is an author of several scientific publications on the development of the Baltic instrumental chamber music, repertoire and performing arts.

On a regular basis and with excellent success she has been preparing students’ chamber ensembles for competitions and International Festivals of Students’ Chamber Music Ensembles. Since 1993 G.Rasa has organized an annual competition ‘ The Best JVLMA Students’ Chamber Ensemble’.  29 graduates of G.Rasa’s chamber-ensemble class have attained Master’s degree and some of them (Antra Viksne, Normunds Viksne, Herta Hansena, Martins Zilberts, Ilona Meija and others) have become faculty members of  JVLMA. In 2013 for her outstanding and creative teaching work Prof. Gunta Rasa was awarded the JVLMA and Swedbank Yearly Prize for the Best of the Staff.
