Juris Kļaviņš

Emeritus professor, Department of Choir Conducting

Since 1971 Juris Kļaviņš has been a professor at the JVLMA Conducting Department. In the period of 1966 - 1968 Juris Kļaviņš was working as a sound director at the recording studio "Melodija" in Riga and between 1968 and 1970 he was the conductor of a vocal group and a small symphonic orchestra that formed part of the national dance group "Daile". From 1987 to 1992 Juris Kļaviņš was the artistic director of the T. Kalniņš Latvian State Radio and Television choir. From 1967 to 2010 Juris Kļaviņš was the artistic director of the University of Latvia mixed choir "Juventus".

Juris Kļaviņš has been the general conductor of multiple Latvian National Song Festivals and the Gaudeamus Baltic Student Song Festival. He is the Bearer of the Three-Star Order awarded in 1999 and an Honorary Member of the University of Latvia since 2009. As a pedagogue Juris Kļaviņš is primarily interested in developing the students' choir music interpretation skills, conducting practice techniques, practical skills in working with singers, mastering conducting in collaboration with performers.
