Jāzeps Vītols Memorial Room
The Jāzeps Vītols Memorial Room, established in the late 1950s through the initiative of composer Ādolfs Skulte, stands as a tribute to the enduring legacy of Jāzeps Vītols, the first rector of the Latvian Academy of Music. Located on the second floor, within the confines of Vītols's former apartment, the room preserves a wealth of artifacts, including furniture, his personal library, manuscripts, and gifts from students and colleagues.
Initially overseen by musicologist Olģerts Grāvītis, expanded after the collapse of the USSR to embrace Latvia's broader music culture. It became a versatile venue, hosting events and fostering connections with emigrated musicians. Moreover, it became a repository for materials related to Latvian music history. The memorial room stores a diverse collection encompassing Latvian musicians, institutions, and significant events, including the Latvian Song and Dance Celebration. This rich repository awaits further research and efforts to enhance accessibility.
You can access the cataloged material via the JVLMA library catalog and digital library. In case of interest and inquiries, please feel free to email vitolaistaba(abols)jvlma.lv to reach out to musicologists Laura Švītiņa and Kristiāna Vaickovska.
