Research at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music is conducted in several directions. The central and most tradition-rich focus is on music science, or musicology. Once a somewhat ideologized field explaining music processes to the public and institutionalized relatively late in Latvia (only after World War II), now musicology at the Latvian Academy of Music has grown into a serious scientific discipline. As we celebrate our centenary, we can confidently say that Latvian music science, with all its main subfields—historical, systematic, and ethnomusicology—is actively thriving and integrates into global processes.
