Juris Švolkovskis

Emeritus professor, Department of String Instruments

Juris ŠVOLKOVSKIS (19.12.1938) – violinist, chamber musician, orchestra soloist, professor.
Graduated from P. Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory  (diploma with distinction) and postgraduate courses /Prof. Galina Barinova` class).

Since 1965 violine professor at Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, Head of String studies (1991-1999). Lectures on History of string performance; several publications on history of the Latvian string performance. President of ESTA Latvia since its foundation in 1993.

62 young violinists graduated from Prof. Švolkovskis` violine class actively performing during their study periods and winning prizes in different competitions. His students permanently are selected for participation in the international youth orchestras (Cremerata Baltica, Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, orchestra of Bach-akademie Stuttgart, etc.). Many of his students successfully continue their education in various music academies and conservatories in Europe. 
Juris Švolkovskis has been jury member in numerous national and international competitions, conducted masterclasses in Lithuania, Estonia, Germany and The Netherlands.

Next to pedagogic career Juris Švolkovskis actively perfomed solo and chamber music including 32 recitals with piano trio and made recordings for the Latvian Radio. He was first violine of the Latvian Academy of Music string quartet /1978-1992/ which performed serious programmes in collaboration with the Latvian soloists and made numerous recordings. Performances in Latvia, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Iceland, Sweden.
