On August 25 and 26, 2021 Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music organises masterclasses of Matti Raekallio, distinguished pianist and professor of the Juilliard School (New York, USA) and Sibelius Academy (Helsinki, Finland).
Raekallio made his American debut in 1981 at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall. In his concerts, he has performed cycles of the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven, Scriabin, and Prokofiev, as well as altogether 62 piano concertos and has recorded about 20 albums. He began his academic career teaching for 30 years at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. In 2005, he became a professor of the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hannover, Germany. Two years later, in 2007, he was invited to join the faculty at Juilliard. He serves as an adjudicator and teaches master classes in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Raekallio’s doctorate (Dr. Mus.) from the Sibelius Academy focused of the history of piano fingering. Subsequently, Raekallio became a member of an international research team, investigating pianists’ fingering choices from the viewpoint of cognitive psychology.
This will be Prof. Raekallio’s first visit to Latvia. The professor is world-renowned for his individual approach to each student, enormous knowledge-base and variety of repertoire.
After studying with him in Germany, Italy and New York, I gained inspiration, valuable experience and deeper understanding of the piano performance matters - not many tutors in this world can match the amount of information and inspiration that Matti Raekallio manages to convey to his students in one hour. Therefore, I am extremely happy that in collaboration with JVLMA we have found a way to welcome him to Latvia and to organise his classes for our young generation of pianists” – comments the London-based concert pianist Antonina Suhanova.
Eight young artists from Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Jazeps Medins Riga Secondary Music School and Emils Darzins Music School will participate in the two-day masterclass of Professor Matti Raekallio. Masterclasses will take place on the 25th and 26th of August 11.00 to 16.00 at the Great Hall of the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music. Masterclasses are supported by the Erasmus+ programme.
