Jānis Porietis

Associate Professor, Department of Wind Instruments

Currently Jānis Porietis is the trumpet professor in Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Music Academy, principal in the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra as well as a member of the National  Guard  Big  Band.  For  ten  years (2006-2016) he  was  also  the  principal  trumpet  of chamber orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga.

Dr. Porietis received his masters’ and bachelor degree in Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Music Academy. During this time he studied in Netherlands with Reijer Dorresteinand in Finland with Pasi Pirinen.

In 2013 he received his DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) from the University of Kansaswhere  during  that  time  he  was  also  the  GTA  (Graduate  Teaching  Assistant)  of  Professor Stephen  Leisring.  In  this  period  of  studies  he  has  participated  inmany  workshops  and masterclasses  led  by Philip  Smith, Joseph  Alesi, Michael  Sachs, Vincent  Penzarella,  Ray Riccomini, Mark Inouye, Jon Lewisand other great brass players. Also, during this period Dr. Porietis took part in three Naxos label CD recordings being the principal and solo trumpet with the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble with whom he also appeared in a concert in Carnegie Hall, New York which was very well received by the critics of The New York Times.  He is also the first brass player who has ever been nominated for the most prestigious music award in Latvia in 2015.

Dr.  Porietis  has  been  a  part  of  numerous  chamber  groups  playing  in  very  different music  genres  which  helps  him  explore  music  in  various  ways.  He  can  also  be  heard  in  his trumpet/piano-organ recitals.
