The academic doctoral study programme “Musicology” (51212) is a third cycle (PhD) study programme which offers the opportunity to obtain a scientific doctoral degree in musicology with the possibility to specialise in three sub-disciplines:
1) historical musicology;
2) systematic musicology, and
3) ethnomusicology.

The strategic goal of the study programme is to educate specialists in musicology in order to enable them to formulate and solve academic and creative problems in the field of musicology; to foster highly motivated candidates for a doctoral degree in Arts; to develop competitive, highly qualified specialists in the international academic and scientific milieu; and to prepare them for academic, scientific, and organisational work at higher education institutions and other cultural and educational institutions.

Upon completion of the academic doctoral study programme “Musicology”, the doctoral student will be able to independently carry out original scientific research based on the latest scientific findings and methodology, as well as to navigate the international theoretical discourse.

After the defence of the doctoral thesis, a PhD degree in Humanities and Arts, the discipline of Music, Visual Arts and Architecture, is granted. The duration of the study programme is 3 years, and it amounts to 180 ECTS. The studies are
full-time on-campus studies. The language of the studies is Latvian. The study programme has been accredited until 16 November 2029.

The doctoral degree is not only the highest level of academic achievement; it also enables the graduates to qualify for research at the international level, offering extensive academic career options, as well as participation in research projects.
