The first professional doctoral study programme in Latvia – professional doctoral study programme “Arts” offered by the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music /JVLMA/, Latvian Academy of Arts /LMA/ and Latvian Academy of Culture /LKA/ – received the licence on 13 October.
Admission to the new study programme with sub-programmes “Music and Performing Arts”, “Visual Arts and Design” and “Audiovisual Arts, Theatre and Contemporary Dance” is expected to take place in early 2021: submission of documents from 11 to 15 January, and entrance examinations – from 20 to 22 January. The studies will start on 1 February. Detailed information on admission to the sub-programmes will be available on the websites of JVLMA, LMA and LKA; we will also soon announce a seminar, where those interested will be introduced to the course of the entrance test and the planned study process.
The study programme has been developed in accordance with the Cabinet Regulation No. 617 of 2 October 2018 “Regulations on the State Standard for Professional Higher Education for Obtaining a Doctoral Degree and the Procedure for Awarding a Professional Doctoral Degree in Arts”, which applies to the organization of professional doctoral studies.
High-level art professionals holding a professional master's degree in music or choreography, a master's degree in humanities or a master's degree in social sciences, or having equivalent higher education, are encouraged to apply for studies in the professional doctoral study programme. The duration of the studies is three years. A professional doctoral degree in arts is awarded after mastering the programme and the preparation of the artistic work, as well as the development and presentation of the theoretical doctoral research.
